09 Sep How To Take Care Of Vinyl Siding
When it comes to house siding, vinyl siding is one of the most common types of house siding homeowners choose. Vinyl siding is durable, long-lasting, requires little maintenance, and is a low-cost option that will help make your house look fantastic. When it comes to vinyl siding, though, it’s important to know how to treat it properly if you want it lasting 20+ years. While vinyl house siding on average lasts 10–12 years, it can last upwards of 30 years when treated right. In today’s blog here at CORE Roofing in Wayne, we talk about some helpful vinyl siding tips and tricks to keep your house looking beautiful for years to come.
In order to keep your Pennsylvania home looking as good as new, there are a few important things you should keep in mind if you have vinyl siding. To promote a longer lifespan for your house siding, always make sure to:
Cleaning your house siding might sound like a waste of time to you since, well, it’s outside. It’s bound to get dirty again from wind, rain, dirt, and other natural phenomena, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make an effort to clean it regularly. Now, we aren’t saying that you should be outside every day with your brush and bucket scrubbing your house. But once a year maybe find some time to give the vinyl siding a good scrub and spray. We think it’s best done in the springtime with the rest of your spring cleaning!
Cleaning your house siding once a year will get rid of any pesky bugs that have taken up residence in your vinyl siding, remove any stains that may have formed over the last year, and keep your home looking beautiful — sometimes just cleaning the siding can make it look more vibrant and a few shades lighter!
Use Gentle Cleaning Solutions
While it may be tempting to throw together some chemicals and crank the power washer up to high, it’s important to use the proper mixtures and tools. Cleaning your vinyl house siding is a quick and easy process that only requires a few ingredients for you to be successful and safe.
When it comes to mixing your cleaning solution, be sure to use gentle cleaners. Here at CORE Roofing in Wayne, we recommend filling a bucket with a gallon of water and adding a ½ cup of trisodium phosphate. You can find trisodium phosphate at most hardware stores and grocery stores.
For rinsing, you can use a garden house, but it won’t be nearly as effective as a power washer will be. After you’ve done some scrubbing with your warm-water solution and a soft-bristled brush, it’s a good idea to use a power washer to rinse the house siding off. Just make sure that you are using a very low setting, if not the lowest setting possible, and aiming downward so the water runs down the slats instead of up into the cracks in between.
Replace Broken Panels
You may think that a broken or damaged vinyl siding panel is just fine and not a big deal since it’s just visual. What many people don’t realize, though, is that your house siding plays a big role in protecting your home from water damage, mold, and decay. Make sure you are replacing any broken or damaged panels as soon as possible in order to keep your home healthy and safe.
